THE DESIGN PROCESS

INITIAL CONSULTATION - THE DESIGN BRIEF

This is an initial meeting, of about two hours, to establish exactly what you want to achieve in your garden. It is an opportunity for us to get to know you and your garden before putting together the design brief and a fee proposal.

SITE ANALYSIS AND SITE SURVEY

Once the fee proposal has been accepted, a site analysis includes testing the soil, photographing the site, noting water table and drainage, views, neighbours, boundaries and potential planning requirements.

A full survey of the site will be carried out from which a scale drawing is developed showing the house, boundaries, trees, features, levels and buildings in the garden. This survey is then used to develop the concept or outline plan and to establish quantities of materials needed for the build.

CONCEPT DESIGN - OUTLINE PLAN

Following detailed consultation, survey and site analysis, an outline or masterplan of a concept design is developed including a 2D plan and initial ideas for plants and hard landscaping.  A meeting to discuss the plan enables you to give feedback and make any changes to the final design. 3D computer illustration of the design can also be arranged and can assist in visualising the final outcome of the garden.

DETAILED DESIGN - PLANTING PLANS AND CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATION

A series of meetings and discussion on plants leads to plans drawn up showing the variety, position and number of plants required.  A plant schedule is used to order the plants and the plan is used for setting out and planting up.

Detailed construction drawings and a written scope of works are produced before going out to tender to contractors to ensure quotes are comparable and the work meets recommended construction parameters.

BUILD AND PLANTING

We work with a few independent contractors who are experts in hard and soft landscaping.  The construction drawings and scope of works enable contractors to provide quotes that can be easily compared.  Once a contractor is appointed for the build, we can assist in dealing with them to maintain oversight of the build and ensure that the design brief and specifications are met.    Following the build, we can source the plants at very competitive prices, arrange delivery and set them out ready for planting by the chosen contractor.

MAINTENANCE

Gardens evolve  - it is inevitable that gardens change as they age.  We will provide a plant maintenance schedule to guide existing gardeners or we offer a maintenance service which can be tailored to the garden.
